When it comes to running a fleet of your own vehicle, it is not quite as simple as buying a few vehicles and off you go! Before you begin, there are a few things that you will need to do to make sure that you are compliant with the law and don’t find any nasty pitfalls later down the line…
Do you Need an Operator’s License – Before you use any vehicles for your business, find out if you need an operator’s license. Very basically, if your vehicles are over a certain weight you will need one, but there are caveats and exemptions that you will need to look into before you begin, so it is worth checking here.
Tachographs – Again, if your vehicles are over a certain weight, you will need them to use tachographs. Digital tachographs are more common now, but some older vehicles still use analogue tachographs. It is worth investing in some good tachograph reading software, as the fines that are incurred from not following these regulations are big and can even end up in the loss of your operator’s license.
Get Everything Sorted Before You Begin – Additional costs to think about are the sign writing on the vehicles, fitting the vehicle tracking systems and finding a garage who will repair your vehicles and do the MOT’s for you. As long as you have researched this before you begin, you won’t have any nasty surprises later down the line.
